“Africanization" of the Americas - John Frazier Associate Professor of Art
Start Date: 1/19/2019Start Time: 3:00 PM
End Date: 1/19/2019End Time: 5:00 PM
Event Description:
In the West we have whitewashed the historical trauma and impact of the slave trade by estimating that only 6.5 million Africans were enslaved in the New World. In fact, the American slave trade more accurately represents the lives, work and deaths of 500 million Black men, women and children. Frazier will counter these racialized cultural misappropriations with the inspiring power of African Diaspora artworks that respond to our common human struggles.

As a leader in innovative pedagogical approaches, Frazier has received numerous awards, including four American Museum Association excellence awards, three “Best Practices in Education” awards, and curriculum-writing awards from the U.S. Department of Education, Illinois State Board of Education, Indiana State Board of Education, United Nations, UNICEF, British Arts Council, and National Board of Multicultural Education.
