Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine Exhibit
Start Date: 10/15/2018 All Day
End Date: 11/19/2018
Event Description:
Many historians have written about medical care during the American Civil War, but the participation and contributions of African Americans as nurses, surgeons, and hospital workers often has been overlooked. The participation of these men and women in the war effort challenged the prescribed notions of both race and gender, and pushed the boundaries of the role of blacks in America. Learn more about those whose desire to participate in the cause for freedom led them to transcend class, education, and social position in the exhibition Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine presented by the NLM, NIH and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
