Event Description:

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will present Univision 23 News Anchor Alina Mayo Azze as the keynote speaker for the Hispanic Heritage Creative Writing Awards, “Building Bridges: A Pathway to the Future," on Oct. 25, at 11 a.m.

Alina Mayo Azze has been a revered staple of Miami broadcast journalism for nearly 30 years. Currently, she anchors the nightly local news for Univision’s WLTV-Noticias 23, a position she has held since 1991.  Previously, she served as news anchor for Telemundo’s WSCV-Channel 51, and proved and honed her skills as an on-air news reporter for 7 years during an earlier stint working for WLTV-Noticias 23.

Mayo Azze’s tenacity as a journalist is evidenced by her numerous accolades and most memorable television reports. She has been honored with three EMMY awards, four ACRIN awards, and two ACCA awards.  Her most featured television reports include “Far Away Mothers,” which focused on Latin American women who leave their families to seek employment in the U.S., and the Guantanamo Air Base.  Her news reports also have put her at the forefront of world events such as the funeral of Princess Diana of Wales in London, England, and the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Over the years, Mayo Azze has demonstrated a genuine commitment to local community groups and professional associations.  A former member of the Board of Directors of Aspira of Florida, she currently volunteers for Amigos for Kids, and serves as an active member of numerous organizations, including the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Miami Chapter; the Cuban Women’s Club; and the Miami Cuban Lion’s Club. In 2005, the United Nations Foundation selected her as one of 15 journalists nationwide to attend the Forum for Electronic Journalists held in New York City.  In addition, she has also been a participant of the Hispanic Leadership Training Conference sponsored by the Cuban-American Council.
