A film by
Rober Calzadilla
Cast: Vicente Quintero, Giovanny García, Vicente Peña, Rossana Hernández

Colombia, Venezuela/ 2016/ 99 min. / Drama/ Not rated
Spanish with English subtitles

At the end of the 80's, by the creeks of the Arauca river, near the Colombian-Venezuelan border, two men survived the brutality of a shooting in which 14 of their mates were killed. They claimed to be mere fishermen, but the Venezuelan army accused them of being guerrilla fighters, intimidated them in every possible way, and even attempted to remove them from the cell where they were guarded by a policeman. Their neighbors prevented their transfer, but the pressure they faced to give in and submit the official version was overwhelming.

Based on a play by Calzadilla and scriptwriter Karin Valecillos, El Amparo invests much time in its characters, their relationships and way of life; while, in a masterstroke of directorial judiciousness, the massacre itself is elided, its horrors left to our imagination. This is a profound meditation on how communities contend with outrage and grief, and the troubling question of who gets to control historical truth.

“An earthily told tale of injustice about a 30-year old tragedy that decimated a Venezuelan pueblo, Roberto Calzadilla’s debut feature, clearly the product of years of reflection on the subject, is a taut drama that smartly and wisely sidesteps the potential pitfalls of historical recreation.” Jonathan Holland, The Hollywood Reporter
