KYLE TROWBRIDGE: RETURN FLIGHT |
|
Event Description: Kyle Trowbridge has been a fixture of the Miami art scene since the late 90s. Attending an opening in the earliest days of the Miami art scene, gallery visitors would inevitably be surprised by the ingenuity of his works. As his notoriety increased, so too did the scale and ambition of his art. In 2012 he installed his Untitled Rant, in large block text, the words Site of Temporarily Invested Interest in the middle of one of the many transient art fairs that frequent South Florida. Trowbridge points out a rather bleak economic side effect that these fairs bring with them. One day they are the site of immense concentrated wealth and glamor, while the next all that remains is a denuded commercial parking lot. Trowbridge is Miami’s artistic equivalent of Baudelaire's Parisian flaneur. He doesn’t seem to care if the viewer understands or even sees his art, but those who take the time to explore his ideas and the paradoxes he reveals are rewarded with a unique satisfaction that only the best art can provide. In this latest series of works, rather than provoke, or otherwise attempt to hijack the viewers rational thought centers, the artist has returned to a fairly traditional way of soothing the aesthetic senses so numbed by constant digital bombardment with paintings that harken back to the golden age of American abstract painting. |
