Event Description:

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will host U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service’s Research Fishery Biologist Dr. Carlos M. Polivka, Wednesday, Dec. 5, at noon.  Titled From Seas to Trees: Applied Behavioral and Evolutionary Ecology, the presentation is part of MDC’s acclaimed School of Science STEMversation Career Speaker Series.    The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Polivka’s presentation will include a discussion of his work across ecosystems in different states, the role of science in ecosystem management, as well as potential STEM careers in federal agencies. Currently based in Wenatchee, Washington, where he serves as the principal investigator on a variety of research projects in terrestrial and aquatic environments, Dr. Polivka’s work has contributed to decision-making activities associated with water quality throughout the Entiat River sub basin, uses of pathogens in insect control, and land management and restoration activities in and around river and stream systems. In addition, Dr. Polivka leads a team actively researching moth communities and their control at various sites across Idaho.

MDC’s STEMversation Career Speaker Series brings experts from the entire STEM spectrum to share their knowledge with students and the community. These presentations expose attendees to new perspectives and developments in these fields and provide students an opportunity to connect with STEM professionals from many specialties.  Future STEMversation speakers include forensics specialist Dr. Henry C. Lee (Jan. 31, 2019) and pediatric geneticistm Dr. Kristin Lindstrom (March 13, 2019).  The series is sponsored by the US Department of Education STEM ISLE and STEM EngInE grants.
