Event Description:

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus will host the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) and Foundations for Leadership: Miami Dade Model UN (MDMUN) 2020 Conference on Feb. 21-22 and 29 for more than 1,100 high school and middle school students.

“North Campus is honored to once again host the Model UN Conference,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, President of the North and Padron Campuses.  “We have an unfaltering commitment to helping ensure that our community’s students have the opportunity to engage in programs that develop literacy, increase skills in diplomacy, and enhance college and career preparation.” 

The Miami Model UN Conference fosters global citizenship builds leadership skills and engages students in an exploration of current world issues through interactive simulations and curricular materials. This year’s keynote speaker, Gillian Sorensen, Former United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Board Member of International Rescue Committee.

This year’s conference will allow student delegates to improve their knowledge of the United Nations, as well as get an in-depth look about the topics they will discuss in committee. The goal is to see each delegate debate and develop solutions in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, helping it move towards a more connected and collaborative global community. Student participants benefit in public speaking, critical thinking, diplomacy, and peer networking.

The 2020 conference will cover themes such as climate change, universal health coverage, immunizations, cyber security, terrorism, sustainable development, rights of LGBTQ individuals, and migration, to name a few. More than 50 county high schools and middle schools will participate at the important event that engages students in the learning of politics, international relations, and global events.
