Ancient Discoveries, Modern Minds: Exploring the Legacy of Pre-Hispanic Objects
Start Date: 2/27/2020Start Time: 8:30 AM
End Date: 2/27/2020End Time: 10:00 AM
Event Description:

Long before European colonizers ‘discovered’ America, the areas we know as Mesoamerica, North America, and South America were advanced civilizations, pulsing with culture in thriving metropoles and rife with stunning monuments, objects, and artifacts. Their profound understanding of science, astronomy, building, writing, metallurgy, and pottery are among the many subjects and materials that demonstrate their extraordinary skills.

The European Contact period, however, threatened the legacy of this precious world: Destroying much of the Taino, Nahua, Maya, Wari, Inca, and Aztec empires, only ruins remain in the region, their artifacts hidden within their tombs and temples. What is left, however, tells part of their story.

Join art historian and curator of the Kislak Center at MDC Freedom Tower for an insightful look into these empires and their objects. Damian’s discussion will dive deeper into the rituals and customs that inspired their creation, and bring attention to the rare artworks and artifacts that make the Kislak Center at MDC Freedom Tower one of the most important pre-Hispanic collections of the United States.

Free parking for this event is available at the MDC Parking Garage, located at 500 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33131. Coffee and refreshments will be served.
