African Americans and the Vote: Modern Hoops and Hurdles
Start Date: 2/7/2020Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Date: 2/7/2020End Time: 1:30 PM
Event Description:
Please join Learning Resources for a presentation by Social Sciences Professor David Shaheen. One hundred and fifty years since the passing of the 15th Amendment prohibiting voter discrimination based on race or color, African Americans are still finding it difficult to exercise their right to vote. Despite the passing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act intended to prohibit states from using methods such as literacy tests and poll taxes to exclude African American voters, a record number of voting restrictions have been recently introduced to state legislatures nationwide. While many brave and impassioned Americans of all walks of life have protested, marched, been arrested and even killed working for voting equality, the fight for voting rights continues.
