Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus presents Rodgers and Hammersteins’, OKLAHOMA! produced by the Kendall Campus’ Music, Theater and Dance Department.

Directed by Misty Bermudez and Dr. Leo Walz and performed by MDC Kendall Theater Opera Ensemble, Rodgers & Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA! first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!

A versatile vocalist, Misty Leah Bermudez has an active career as a concert soloist, chamber artist, operatic actress and educator. Ms. Bermudez is on the voice faculty of Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus, where she also directs the Opera Theatre Ensemble and the Chamber Singers. Her students have been admitted to fine college vocal programs around the country with impressive scholarship awards. Highly sought after, mezzo-soprano Ms. Bermudez has captivated critics and audiences alike with her "ravishing" voice and "compelling" concert performances (South Florida Sun Sentinel, Palm Beach Arts Paper). Residents of South Florida will recognize Ms. Bermudez as a founding member of the Grammy-nominated vocal ensemble Seraphic Fire.  In May 2018, Ms. Bermudez became the first female Artistic Director of the Civic Chorale of Greater Miami in its 48-year history.

A well-known conductor and educator, Dr. Leo Walz teaches music history and music theory at MDC Kendall Campus. He is the founder of The Alhambra Orchestra, Miami’s longest-lived and most active community orchestra, and works in various capacities with Miami Lyric Opera.  Dr. Walz also frequently conducts in Eastern Europe and Central America. He holds a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Miami, and studied piano with Gordon DeBroder and Janet Landreth in his native Colorado.
The two night musical engagement opens Friday March 15th  through Saturday March 16th.  Admission is free and open to the public.
