Event Description:

Israel's #1 Film of the Year!
THE WOMEN’S BALCONY (Ismach Hatani)

A film by Shlomit Nehama and Emil Ben-Simon
Cast: Orna Banai, Itzik Cohen, Einat Sarouf, Igal Naor

Israel | 2016 | 96 minutes | Comedy, Drama | Not Rated
Hebrew with English subtitles

When the women’s balcony in an Orthodox synagogue collapses, leaving the rabbi’s wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock, the congregation falls into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. This tests the women’s friendships and creates an almost Lysistrata-type rift between the community’s women and men. A dramedy about old traditions and values and the power of women to keep all of these together in the face of modern extremism.

Screenplay: Shlomit Tehama
Production: Osnat Handelsman | Keren Talia Kleinhendler
Cinematography: Ziv Berkovich
Editing:  Einat Glaser Zarhin
Music:  Ahuva Ozeri |  Shaul Besser

2016 Toronto Film Festival: Official selection

Los Angeles Times Critics’ Pick. “It sounds paradoxical, but it's often true that the more culturally precise a foreign language film is, the more universal its appeal becomes. This is very much the case with the charming but pointed The Women's Balcony. A major box-office success in Israel, the film is so seemingly site-specific that even its driving force, screenwriter Shlomit Nehama, was surprised when it began succeeding overseas.” -  Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times | full review

“An utterly charming, good-humored peek into the warring factions within one small, closely knit Israeli Orthodox congregation.” - Simi Horwitz, Film Journal International | full review

“A nicely observed dramedy. Viewers will leave the theater in a joyous mood.” -  Alissa Simon, Variety | full review

“Emil Ben-Shimon's The Women's Balcony proves that a movie doesn't have to be mean spirited in order to be funny.” -  Hannah Brown, The Jerusalem Post | full review

“The most moving element emerges from the film’s essential respect for ancient ritual, even as it questions extreme orthodoxies. It’s a tough tightrope to walk, and this film does it skillfully. ” - Susan G. Cole, Now Toronto
