Snegúrochka was born in times of old in Tsar Berendey’s mythical kingdom, the fruit of the union between Spring Beauty and Grandfather Frost. Protected by her parents from the jealousy of the Sun God Yarilo, (who vowed to warm her heart when she gets older and falls in love), Snegúrochka’s fate is entrusted to a wood sprite. A masterpiece of popular Slavic literature, The Snow Maiden brings to the stage a magical fantasy of love and mythical renewal.  Aida Garifullina sings the role of Snegúrochka whilst the production and musical direction have been left in the capable hands of two other Russian artists: the young conductor Mikhail Tatarnikov and director Dmitri Tcherniakov.

The Snow Maiden marks Garifullina's Opéra de Paris debut. Having the name Aida can surely only help if your career choice is ‘soprano’! However, Verdi’s heroine isn’t in Aida Garifullina’s repertoire, for the Kazan-born singer is building a career on lighter, lyric soprano roles, especially those featuring demanding coloratura. In 2013, she made her debut at the Mariinsky Opera, but it was her 2013 Operalia win in Verona which brought her to worldwide attention, an ensemble position at the Wiener Staatsoper and a prestigious Decca recording contract.

Dmitri Tcherniakov, who is known for his extraordinary takes in such operas as Don Giovanni,Il Trovatore”and Eugene Onegin, directs the new production of “The Snow Maiden” with costumes by Elena Zaitseva and sets by Tcherniakov himself.

The opera will be presented eight times in a co-production with Bel Air Media. “The Snow Maiden” will be presented live in theaters on April 25
