Event Description:

SANTA Y ANDRÉS

A  film by Carlos Lechuga
Cast: Lola Amores, Eduardo Martínez
Cuba, Colombia, France | 2017 | 105 min | Drama | Not Rated
Spanish with English subtitles

Set in 1983, the second feature from Cuban writer-director Carlos Lechuga (Melaza) chronicles the human encounter between Andrés, a novelist ostracized for his “ideological problems” and his sexuality, and Santa, a woman charged with keeping this ostensibly dangerous dissident from disrupting a political event and gaining the attention of the foreign press. Santa & Andrés is at once intimate and expansive, a chamber drama whose central action is a dialogue between two souls on either side of a profound cultural divide. Proximity inevitably prompts captive and warden to realize how much they have in common—and how completely the last six decades have affected the Cuban psyche. Carlos Lechuga was born in Havana. He studied directing at Cuba’s Instituto Superior de Arte, and scriptwriting at the International Film and TV School in San Antonio de los Baños. After directing several short films he made his feature debut with Melaza (12). Santa & Andres (16) is his second feature. The film, already banned in Cuba, was initially selected to compete in the Havana Film Festival New York, but was pulled from the program by director Carlos Lechuga after being taken out of competition. The film had its Florida Premiere at MDC’s Tower Theater as part of the 34th Miami Film Festival, where it won the Best Actor Award (shared by Lola Amores and Eduardo Martinez) and will return for its exclusive worldwide commercial release.

“Their eventual emotional, if not political, understanding is wonderfully portrayed by the actors and smartly delineated in the screenplay.” - Nathaniel Rogers , Film Experience | full review

- Pilar Ayuso, El Nuevo Herald | full review

“A heart-breaking compelling tale.” – Roger Walker-Dack , Queer Guru  | full review

“This is not Lechuga’s first run-in with ICAIC (Cuban Film Institue), which also controls Cuba’s cinemas. His debut feature Melaza  (Molasses), which turned on the social decline of a sugar town that has had its mill close down, did not please ICAIC. It asked Lechuga to remove any mention of ICAIC’s collaboration in the credits.

– Roberto Madrigal, Cuba Encuentro full review
