End Date: 10/7/2017End Time: 2:30 PM
Event Description:

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) physician assistant students, in collaboration with the Mexican American Council, will present the Fourth Annual Project S.E.E.D (Serving Everyone Embracing Diversity) Health Fair for Migrant Farm Workers on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., at the South Dade Center in Homestead.  The community outreach project was developed by students to bring access to healthcare screenings and follow up care for migrant farm workers and their families living in Homestead.

For the past four years, MDC’s physician assistant studies students have organized this healthcare event under the supervision of Dr. Dadilia Garces Mejia to benefit an often underserved population. Dr. Garces Mejia was selected to receive the 2017 Spirit of Service Learning Award for her efforts with Project SEED.

Last year, they helped more than 400 attendees. Students will provide vision, hearing, pulmonary, urine, cholesterol, and glucose screenings, as well as HIV/STD testing, mammograms, dental exams, pediatric preventive screenings, and flu vaccines. Additionally, they will offer education on preventing obesity and the importance of lifestyle modifications, such as healthy eating and exercise.

This year’s event supporters also include City of Homestead Mayor’s Office, the Homestead Housing Authority, Baptist Hospital Homestead, the Community Health of South Florida, Inc., Walgreens, the Florida Marlins, and Dr. Vijaykumar Zaveri.

For information, please contact Dr. Dadilia Garces Mejia at 305-237-4353.
