The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit.

The five artists featured in this exhibition are Lynne Golob Gelfman, Pat Lipsky, Emilio Sanchez, Xaviera Simmons, and Purvis Young. Each of these American artists produced distinctive bodies of work that allow for rumination on the human condition. Whether it be work that represents land or evokes land, compositions that literally present text or conjure unique storytelling, or art that considers visual perception and how light and color coalesce, this exhibition invites unexpected dialogue about American art.

This exhibition is organized in support of the America250 celebrations at Miami Dade College and nationwide. This exhibition joins other projects organized by the MOAD team, including Purvis Young: Out of the Vault and Abstraction as Legacy as a part of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the formal establishment of the United States of America.

The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit.

The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit.

Every story is a small act of trespass — a crossing into lives we inhabit for a little while. In Japan, autumn is set aside for exactly this. Dokusho no Aki, the season for reading, when the world slows down enough for a book to hold its gaze open. This exhibition explores storytelling through artifacts from across the world — each object a threshold built by hands that never expected to speak to one another. A thousand rivers carry a thousand stories under a single moon. To walk this gallery is to pass through a thousand gates — and to find, on the other side of each, a piece of yourself.

You can also visit the gallery every Thursday from September 16th through December 4th, from 10AM-1PM, to enjoy a calm space where art and words meet. Explore the gallery, bring a book, or simply pause for a moment of quiet inspiration. Come in. Look. Read. Pause. A space between the everyday and the extraordinary. The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit.

Are you ready to be a changemaker? Change begins with us. Join Single Stop, iCED, and Student Life for "Be the Change! Hunger Awareness Day Food Distribution. Hunger Awareness Day draws attention to the growing issue of food insecurity among college students, both nationwide and here in Florida.

At North Campus, the Food Pantry for Students and Single Stop offers vital support to help students meet basic needs. From food assistance to access to community resources, these programs aim to remove barriers that can impact academic success and retention. This day serves as a reminder that no student should choose between education and a meal.

Join us to take a step toward being the change you wish to see in the world. Volunteer shifts are available from 7:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. to help set up, sort, and distribute the food. Your participation in these shifts counts as volunteer hours towards earning a Presidential Service Learning Award.

In need of food? Stop by Parking Lot #13 between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and pick up some groceries, free of charge. That is what community is all about.

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman Scholarship is an undergraduate scholarship program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study or intern abroad. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for students who are U.S. citizens, Federal Pell Grant recipients, and studying at the undergraduate level at a two or four-year institution.

In celebration of both Hispanic Heritage Month and Changemaking Week, our September Cafecito will feature Dr. Trinidad Argüelles and students as guest speakers, leading a conversation on aging within Hispanic communities and the importance of honoring the wisdom, contributions, and lived experiences of older adults. Miami-Dade’s participation, organized by VolunteerCleanup.org and Clean Miami-Dade, features 65+ cleanups all over the county with 4,000 volunteers. This specific cleanup is being led by the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, a historical and ecological gem located only minutes from downtown Miami.

Transportation is provided from North Campus (bus departs at 9 am) and Wolfson Campus (bus departs at 9:20 am), and you'll be done and back to campus by 1:30 pm.

Romina (Romi) began practicing yoga back in 2017, the physical aspect of yoga served as a launch pad and she quickly fell in love with the practice and aimed to explore many different types of yoga. A practice that was a hobby quickly turned into a passion. Her love of yoga pushed Romina to pursue her 200-hr yoga teacher training in Orlando, FL and she now teaches in many different areas in Miami. Romina enjoys teaching vinyasa flow and gentle flows with creative transitions, focusing on strengths, stability and alignment.

Whether you are a beginner or advance practitioner, using movement and breathwork, rest assure you'll leave feeling transformed in all aspects of the mind, body, and spirit.

Admission to the Freedom Tower exhibitions and galleries following the class is included with your RSVP.

Attendees may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets.

Please bring your own yoga mat. Yoga mats will not be available onsite.

The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit.

An art exhibition built on the transformation of matter loses something essential if it can only be seen. The distance between a palm frond left to rot in a gutter and the same frond sealed in tar and resin is, above all, a distance felt in the hand, the difference between something brittle and something that has been given, almost paradoxically, a second skin. For the student visitors who will move through this gallery in groups, many during a single class period and many with no background in art at all, sight alone will not carry that argument. The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit.

The act of painting can also make history. Through hard edges and expressive forms, American artists re-imagined painting and used abstraction as a mechanism to consider the human body, natural environs, architecture, emotion, and an economy of line.

This exhibition is not meant to be exhaustive but intended to highlight the breadth of painterly abstraction in the United States. Following the 1950s, it became clear that the art world turned to the U.S. for ingenuity and boundary-breaking abstract art forms. From trends that arose in Havana and made it to the U.S. through exile to experiments developed in New York and Los Angeles, the legacy of American abstraction evolves as rich and varied. The featured artists include Young-Il Ahn, Sam Gilliam, Carmen Herrera, Hans Hofmann, Virginia Jaramillo, Lloyd Kiva New, Willem de Kooning, George Morrison, Noemí Ruiz, Zilia Sánchez, and Vaughn Spann.

On July 4, 2026, the U.S. commemorates and celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This historic milestone offers an opportunity to pause and reflect on this nation’s past, honor the contributions of Americans, and to look ahead toward the future we aspire to create for the next generation and beyond. The legacy of painterly abstraction in the U.S. offers a distinctive way to celebrate the creativity and innovation that defines the American spirit.
