Join the Earth Ethics Institute (EEI) for a visit to Everglades National Park! This is the friendly and educational introduction you've been waiting for. Mike Matthews, director of EEI, and Yadira Capaz, EEI Program Professional at Padron Campus, will guide the group through the Anhinga Trail, Long Pine Key, and Pa-hay-okee Overlook to learn more about our native ecosystem and meditate in nature.
Please bring a hat or sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, and walking shoes. In the daytime, the mosquitoes are barely noticeable but bring insect repellent in case you need it. We will sit down for lunch in the picnic area in Long Pine Key, so we encourage you to bring your own lunch and snacks to share. If you are interested in wading knee-deep through the Cypress domes (optional) outside of Pa-hay-okee, bring a towel and change of clothes.
We will have a small shuttle leaving from Padron Campus to Everglades National Park at 8:30am. The shuttle will return students to Padron campus some time around 5pm. Please email Yadira (ycapaz@mdc.edu) to reserve a spot on the shuttle. You are also welcome to drive on your own and park at the Coe Visitor Center for free.
We will meet as a group at 10am at the entrance of the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center (40001 State Road 9336 Homestead, FL 33034) to tour the museum then carpool together inside the park.
Carpool with us from the visitor center and avoid the park entrance fee. Otherwise, a mile past the Coe Visitor Center parking lot there is a gate where you will be asked to pay $30 per car for a 7-day pass. If you carpool with us into the park, the fee will be waived. If you arrive a little later, we will move from a tour of the Coe Visitor Center to the Anhinga Trail (the first trail once you enter the park), and you can meet us there.
Be aware that there is often no phone signal inside Everglades National Park.
