How might some of the latest technology help us in building a better world – or can they? Artificial Intelligence (AI) comes at a time to make sense of a rapidly shifting, unsettling world – but we hold diverse opinions and feelings about how exactly it will impact us. Join us as we welcome globally-recognized futurist and AI expert, Mr. John Havens, to discuss the role AI will have in assisting humans to develop strategies for a more sustainable world. In this talk, John will introduce students to major issues found at the intersection of AI ethics and sustainability. Highlighting a current sustainability project called Planet Positive 2030, his talk will underscore the need to ensure environmental and human flourishing are prioritized at the outset of design—the same principles that should drive all AI today.
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is the world’s largest technical professional organization, with a membership of engineers, scientists, and allied professionals. It is a leading authority in areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers, and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power, and consumer electronics.
John C. Havens is Executive Director of The IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems that has two primary outputs – the creation and iteration of a body of work known as Ethically Aligned Design: A Vision for Prioritizing Human Well-being with Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and the recommendation of ideas for Standards Projects focused on prioritizing ethical considerations in A/IS.
