Drs. Jessica Espinoza and Suzanne Cruz will highlight the accomplishments of Hispanic women in STEM and explore how their stories can be shared with young learners in K–3 classrooms. Early childhood majors will learn how to design culturally responsive activities that promote curiosity and confidence in STEM while honoring heritage. Examples will include incorporating storytelling about pioneers such as Ellen Ochoa (astronaut), Sabrina Gonzalez Pasterski (physicist), and Dr. Antonia Novello (physician and U.S. Surgeon General), alongside developmentally appropriate STEM activities like building simple rockets, exploring patterns in science and math, or conducting hands-on health and wellness investigations. The session will emphasize strategies for promoting more girls’ engagement in STEM through positive representation and inclusive classroom practices.
