On Thursday, August 22, 6pm to 8:30pm, join Miami Dade College’s Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives for Media Maker Mashup: Film Prep for Preservation, a workshop organized specifically for contemporary artists looking to expand their practice by relaying skills and advocating for the possibilities of hand-made cinema expression. Instructor Barron Sherer is from the Knight Foundation-sponsored art project Moving Image Alliance and is a contemporary artist known for his cinema-adjacent art-making. He geared this session for those interested in personal expression and experimentation.

This free unique and introductory hands-on (learn to splice!) film preservation workshop is designed for media artists "born digital" and new to working with 16mm film and other analog formats. It's a practical, skill-building opportunity that relates D.I.Y. best practices in prepping media for digital migration.

The workshop will begin in Building 8, 4th floor, Room 8401, with a technical introduction to 16mm and 8mm film formats. Sherer will then discuss analog-to-digital workflows, with special attention to how film and tape can be used in post-production, working with photochemical labs, legacy tape transfer houses, and digital colorists. Then, for those who are ready and willing, we head into the Wolfson Archives' workroom for some hands-on film preparation and digitization demonstrations.
